People with disabilities comprise the largest minority in the country. Despite their potential impact on economic development, 90% of adults with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities (DD/ID) are unemployed. In addition, young adults with disabilities are often unfairly deemed incompetent to hold competitive, integrated jobs without exploration to the contrary. Build Inclusion works with community leaders and advocates to promote intentional inclusion, opportunity and increased access for individuals with disabilities.
Job seekers with disabilities have much to add to an organization however, vocational opportunities are ignored and far too often, other options, such as adult day centers, sheltered workshops, or simply staying at home with family members often becomes the norm. When individuals with disabilities are given the chance to share their strengths, skills and interests through employment all parties benefit, not just the job seeker. For example, businesses benefit through the valued contribution of their new employee, and through customization may even experience increased productivity of their entire workforce. Communities benefit by being more inclusive, and accessible. And, families can benefit by being given a chance to also enter or re-enter the workforce. Each of these aspects can contribute to the overall economic development of a geographical area.
One distinct strategy that Build Inclusion uses to target future job seekers is by collaborating with teachers and school administrators, OVR/OFB personnel, parents, advocacy groups and job seekers to make sure that individuals with disabilities have the best possible chance for success after school. Driven by high expectations, Build Inclusion works with community leaders and advocates to promote intentional inclusion, opportunity and access for individuals with disabilities. While exclusion isn’t always intentional, inclusion must be. Our company works to help job seekers find employment in good jobs that fit their skills, strengths and interests.
When making a successful employment match, both the job seeker and the business become our clients and it is important that we understand the needs of both in order to properly customize a position. We value our partnership with job seekers and employers and keep open lines of communication. Because of the age of our job seekers, it is also important that we help to educate families on the benefits of their sons and daughters working and what that means for their future.
